Chósta
Late Night Jazz radio
Q&A
Chósta is…?
I’m an artist and producer from seaside Dublin who makes music inspired by my coastal surroundings.
Who inspired you to make music in general? …and especially the song „Late Night Jazz radio“?
Friends, family, other artists. I’m inspired by anyone who puts their neck on the line and expresses themselves through art.
Late Night Jazz Radio was heavily influenced by twilight hours radio which I would’ve listened to a lot growing up when I should’ve been sleeping before school!
There’s an Irish radio host named Donal Dineen who would play such weird and wonderful music well past my bedtime. I think his show set me on this path.
The track creates a great atmosphere, how much time did you spend on finding the right sounds and on the mix?
I make music quite slowly and am certainly not prolific, so this one (like most of my tunes) took months and months of fiddling, rearranging and reimagining.
What is your creative process like?
The idea for a song mostly starts with a specific sound or sample that I make or find. I don’t force myself to make music, I’ll only do so when it feels right.
If I’m not in the mood to create, I’ll leave it and do something else.
When do you decide that a song is ready for a release?
I normally listen to the track in various states/circumstances, and if it works in all those settings I release it.
Do you remember your first ever self written song?
Yes. I think it was an edit of some disco Christmas song. Needless to say it wasn’t very good!
What was the first ever House/Electronica/… song you listened to?
Impossible to remember exactly which one, but I’d say it was probably Stardust’s ‘The Music Sounds Better With You’ or David Morales’ ‘Needin’ U’.
There’s a good chance it was a 90s era Ibiza track I heard as a kid.
What do you prefer, a live gig or a studio session?
Well due to the pandemic I still haven’t played a gig! That will hopefully change in December.
What’s next for you?
As previously mentioned, I play my first two shows supporting Sour Blood and Real Lies in successive December nights in Dublin.
I’m also finishing work on my debut album and hope to play as many shows as I can in 2022.
