‘The Light You Reflect’ by E.G. Phillips

‘The Light You Reflect’ may sound simple from the title alone, but, as always, the song goes into great depth. Musically, we move a little in the orbit of Tom Waits, which suits the lyrics well.
In terms of content, it is an interweaving of myth, biology, and perception. The hunter who sees Artemis by chance and the king who discovers Mélusine’s transformation break unwritten rules—and must bear the consequences. Whether unintentionally or out of curiosity, their fates seem predetermined.
The double helix of life assumes its position: genes shape behavior, whether this is recognized or not. The distinction between self-determination and biological imprinting becomes indistinct, thus prompting the following question—are we truly free agents, or merely prisoners of our inner code?
Our charisma/light helps us make connections, but it can also lead to misunderstandings. Neuronal impulses dictate reactions—they’re uncontrollable and intense.

So, the song looks at what controls us—is it instinct, how we’re brought up, or something that simply happens? A dance between choice and destiny. In the end, the question remains as to whether we are shaping our own destiny or merely dancing along a predetermined path – but it is precisely this tension that makes ‘The Light You Reflect’ a fascinating and profound journey between myth and reality.
