‘Stalker’ by Nefast Project tells the story of a love that turns into obsession. One convinces oneself that everything is predestined and uses this to excuse one’s behaviour. Closeness is not sought here, but enforced: constant observation, following, never letting go. The other person is stylised as a ‘cure’, as if they were a remedy for an inner emptiness – this dehumanises the person and reduces them to a function.
Musically, this fits in with the aesthetics of New Wave: cool synths, a steady pulse, a voice that creates distance. This soundscape does not make the obsession louder, but icier – and thus even more eerie. The fact that Nefast Project comes from Brazil adds an interesting friction: instead of tropical warmth, urban night, neon light, concrete and inner coldness dominate.
The song shows how romantic language blurs boundaries. ‘Care’ serves as a cover for control. Thus, intimacy becomes surveillance, desire becomes possession. Great release!
