Kill Your Darlings – GUNMOLL

GUNMOLL’s debut Kill Your Darlings is an energetic, mysterious effort that blends cinematic aesthetics, raw surf rock and Balkan colours into a unique sound; Jolien Grünberg’s voice and Bram Bol’s guitar work drive the songs forward with sharply contoured riffs and pop-friendly hooks, while the rhythm section delivers deep grooves that invite you to dance and cheer along. The album tells the story of a gunmoll’s life in twelve fragmentary scenes — persecution, loss of innocence, revenge and tender moments — and works with masks, inner demons and dark humour, so that the character oscillates between victim and perpetrator and the listener is invited to piece together the puzzle. Cinematic references to Morricone, Tarantino and Lynch are noticeable, without the band sinking into quotations; instead, a theatrical, cult atmosphere emerges that is sure to become a ritualistic experience live. Kill Your Darlings is intense, immediate and surprisingly accessible at the same time: a debut that arouses curiosity and leaves you wanting more.
