Sunset or Sunrise – Andy Jans-Brown

Sunset or Sunrise feels like an indie rock storm that sets off with full force yet carries a strange heaviness within it. The track drives forward like a train that never stops, while Jans-Brown’s restrained, almost stoic voice creates a tension that both propels and slows the song down. This friction between urgency and restraint is at the heart of the piece: the question of whether we are hurtling towards collapse or standing on the threshold of something new – or both at once. Jans-Brown’s ability to smuggle big themes into a compact, hook-driven format is particularly powerful. Behind the energy lies a thoughtful exploration of identity, love and the absurd desire to be loved ‘for who we are’ while simultaneously moulding ourselves for others. The film clip congenially translates this tension: a seemingly harmless beach dinner that slowly descends into chaos. The increasingly derailed waiter acts as a grotesque mirror of social irritability, while Jans-Brown is left behind at the end as a silent witness and involuntary scapegoat. Sunset or Sunrise deliberately remains open-ended. It captures the feeling of standing in an in-between space – between the end and the beginning, between night and morning.
