Drown – kamikaze

With “Drown”, kamikaze deliver a single that captures the shift from attraction to dependence with striking clarity. As the fifth single from their debut album The End, the song describes the feeling of dissolving into another person’s thoughts and footsteps – a creeping process between devotion and the loss of self. Musically, “Drown” navigates a finely balanced tension: delicate melodies meet crisp guitars, whilst subtle synth pads create a subtle sense of urgency. The track feels almost danceable, without ever becoming truly euphoric. Instead, it creates a sound that lies somewhere between dream pop, post-punk and indie pop – pop for broken hearts that haven’t given up yet. The song captures a deep sense of inner conflict, threading this feeling through its central idea of wanting to merge entirely with another person—even while knowing that such surrender carries its own kind of hurt. At the core of Drown lies this tension‑laden longing, a pull toward closeness that unfolds precisely as an equally persistent reluctance to give up one’s autonomy asserts itself. Caught between these opposing forces, the emotions drift and collide: a movement between pleading and letting go, between yearning and the quiet awareness that this very yearning has the power to consume. The result is a track that captures the dangerous beauty of a connection that is too intense to be healthy, and too magnetic to resist. kamikaze remain true to their ‘Soft Riot Pop’: bittersweet melancholy, rebellious energy and an uncompromising DIY attitude. Since 2017, Jessi and Flo have been blurring the lines between pop appeal and punk attitude – self-taught, independent and uncompromising.
