Computer Love – UFO1982, Rogue FX

“Computer Love” feels like a piece of music that hails from different eras all at once, because UFO1982 and Rogue FX weave their respective influences together so seamlessly that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Whilst the synth riffs run through the track as if they were setting out to tell a story of their own, these massive drum fills and unexpectedly sharp guitar riffs keep breaking in, giving the song a tension that goes far beyond mere retro charm. Thematically, the track revolves around digital fixation and relationships that develop amidst profile pictures, chats and projections – something that still seemed like futuristic romance in the 80s, but has now become almost banal. It is precisely this shift that makes the song interesting: it describes a love story that feels as though it used to be fantasy and has now become reality. Rogue FX brings his experience from synthpop and house, which is evident in the clear hook structure, whilst UFO1982 contributes their cinematic signature style, shaped by pop culture and science fiction. Together, they create a track that doesn’t merely reference nostalgia, but takes it further.
