Me & Melancholy is back with his new album „Open Your Eyes“. Eleven songs, eleven bangers? Let’s see. Anyone who remembers the predecessor, „Illusio Veri“ (not to mention Under Cover Part 2), will set the bar high and expect at least the same quality. I can say upfront, it’s a matter of taste which of the two albums is better, but the quality is undoubtedly on the same level.

For the opener, which also shares the name of the album, Peter Ehrling delved deep into his box of inspiration, pulling out a mix of „Behind the Wheel“ and „Enjoy the silence“. „Open Your Eyes“ has everything a hit needs: melody, coolness, and that magical beat. A great way to kick things off. „Don’t Leave Me Here in the Dark“ slows things down, radiating a mood that feels like ice meeting warmth – this track unfolds gradually and becomes a second highlight. „Naive,“ one of my personal favorites, delivers immense energy. I’d even rank it higher than the opener. „In the Blink of an Eye“ adds a touch of passion, while „A Quiet Place in the Dark“ takes us back to melancholy. The playful „Are You Still Here?“ stands out with echoes of „A Broken Frame-era vibes“. „One Last Kiss“ is poppy and will easily appeal to newcomers.
My second favorite track is „Big Lie.“ It’s classic Peter but with fresh twists. The atmosphere this track creates is just phenomenal. „There Is a Whisper in the Wind“ takes an industrial turn and adds a surprising sense of coziness to the genre. Closing the album is my third favorite, „Cold Down to the Bone.“ This track truly captures me with its overall mood and arrangement.
On the lyrical side, the album dives deep into the human experience and societal themes. It challenges us to resist manipulation and blind obedience, to critically examine our reality and pursue the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable or painful. At the same time, the songs explore the longing for authenticity and connections lost, offering an anchor in a chaotic world. They reflect deep emotional struggles, from betrayal to isolation, illustrating just how complex and challenging relationships and self-awareness can be.

All in all, Open Your Eyes marks the much-anticipated return of Me & Melancholy and lives up to the high expectations set by Illusio Veri (not to mention Under Cover Part 2). With its impressive quality and artistic diversity, the album takes listeners on a journey across 11 tracks, ranging from energetic to melancholic to introspective. Each track brings its own atmosphere – from the hit-laden opener to the electrifying „Naive“ and the moving finale „Cold Down to the Bone“.
