Backyard Astronauts – I WANT POETRY

With “Backyard Astronauts”, I WANT POETRY open a window onto those bountiful summers when a garden was enough to step into the universe. The German indietronica duo thus taps into a cultural mood that is currently flaring up everywhere: Artemis II euphoria, Ryan Gosling’s interstellar tale of friendship, a collective gaze upwards – away from cynicism, towards a future that seems possible once more. The song begins with a lean, pulsating beat reminiscent of Lorde’s early, airy atmospheres. Even the opening lines – “Bare feet on concrete / We’re out in the heat” – catapult us back to those afternoons when imagination knew no bounds. Tine von Bergen’s voice acts as a guiding beacon: warm, clear, with a kind of inner sparkle that simultaneously grounds and lifts the song. When the chorus kicks in, it truly feels like a launch sequence: a vast, radiant panorama that nevertheless retains the intimacy of the garden from which it all originates. This is precisely where the track’s strength lies: it combines childlike boundlessness with adult longing, nostalgia with a sense of new beginnings, memory with vision. Their album Future Selves is set for release on 5 June 2026. The song „Backyard Astronauts“ is a great example of the band’s creative ethos. The band want to inspire amazement, bring people closer together and demonstrate that the future is not something distant, but something we are all creating right now.
