Breakdown – Andrew Corbin

‘Breakdown’ unfolds like a scene set right in the middle of the room: a track that works not only because of its synth-pop and funk elements, but also because of what happens in the lyrics. The interlocking synth lines push forward, whilst the springy bass pulls the body in the direction already dictated by the lyrics – into that in-between space where thought fades and movement becomes language.
The drums, dry and direct, feel like little jolts that structure the moment in the half-light. That is precisely where the lyrics come in: a call that draws someone over, a space in which one no longer explains oneself, but instead realigns oneself to the rhythm. The heat created musically by shimmering pads and tightly controlled filter movements mirrors the liberation described in the lyrics – a burning that does not destroy, but purifies.
Corbin uses retro elements as a driving force, not as a reference, and shapes them into a present that urges, pushes and takes physical hold. ‘Breakdown’ demonstrates how modern synth-pop can work: immediate, vibrant, purposeful – a sound that not only carries the listener along, but draws them right into the very scene that the lyrics so vividly sketch out.
