Fragments – SuperJupiter

With ‘Fragments’, the Norwegian band SuperJupiter have released a single that pays homage to the grand melodies and organic sound of the 1980s, without succumbing to mere nostalgia. Here, synthesisers and guitars do not compete with one another, but form the foundation of a warm, melodic pop-rock sound that is more reminiscent of the intersection of AOR, soft rock and sophisticated mainstream pop than of today’s synthwave.
The song derives its impact from the contrast between restrained, melancholic verses and a wide-open chorus. Whilst the verses are characterised by intimacy and vulnerability, the chorus focuses on grandeur and emotional breadth. It is from this interplay of vulnerability and emotional depth that the song’s central theme emerges: the allure of a person who offers comfort whilst at the same time leaving wounds in their wake. The recurring motif of ‘fragments’ in particular conjures up powerful imagery. It is deliberately left open as to whether these are memories, glints of light or shards of an idealised perception. It is precisely this ambiguity that lends the song its poetic quality.
‘Fragments’ is not a song designed for instant impact. It grows on you with every listen and wins you over with its honest songwriting, tasteful production and a keen sense of atmosphere. SuperJupiter demonstrate just how timeless the combination of guitars, synthesisers and grand emotions can sound.
