With “The Atheist”, Tobias Zaldua presents an atmospheric blend of electronic, synth-pop and experimental soundscapes, combining personal experiences with social and philosophical questions. The song’s unusual backstory dates back to 2018: after a concert in Lisbon, Zaldua had to walk for three hours through a Portuguese village in the middle of the night. The barking of the dogs, which carried from house to house across the valley, became the rhythmic starting point for the track.
The lyrics explore themes of loneliness, lost ideals, religion, nostalgia and the search for a path to happiness and inner peace. The recurring line “There are so many roads to being lonely / But to happiness maybe two or three” sums up this existential quest.
Particularly striking are the references to 1988 and 1989 and the longing for a time when a better future seemed possible. At the same time, Zaldua questions religious dogmas as well as the temptations of money, power and technological control.
Musically, Zaldua translates these themes into a minimalist yet multi-layered electronic soundscape. “The Atheist” combines melancholic synth-pop elements with experimental structures, creating a contemplative atmosphere. Rather than offering simple answers, the track leaves the listener with a number of open questions, caught somewhere between the past, the present and the future.
