I Need a Fortune – The Fictionals

In ‘I Need a Fortune’, The Fictionals blend punk-inspired brashness, gritty pub rock and quirky electronic sounds to create a distinctive sound. Futuristic synth effects open the track, before a bouncy bassline sets the groove. The vocals remain laid-back and defiant, whilst distorted guitars and a biting chorus really build up the intensity. Driving rhythms meet a detached delivery, lending the track an edgy new wave feel. Lyrically, it’s all about money worries, big-city frustrations and an uncertain future – combined with the absurd hope of finding answers to one’s own problems from, of all things, a mechanical fortune-telling machine. Shifting tempos keep the tension high before a powerful outro brings the song to a close. Raw, quirky and full of attitude: a bizarre rock journey that defies every smooth, polished convention.

caller waiting – Laeky

With ‘caller waiting’, Laeky demonstrates just how well thoughtful lyrics and driving indie-pop can be combined. The song grew out of two folk tracks that eventually came together to form a cohesive whole. Lyrically, it deals with missed opportunities, difficult relationships, feelings of guilt and the desire for closeness. The narrator seems torn between longing and inner turmoil, whilst trying to convince himself that everything is all right. It is precisely this blend of vulnerability, insecurity and a certain self-destructiveness that makes the lyrics so compelling. Musically, this is counterbalanced by a catchy hook that really drives the track forward. Laeky’s voice remains intimate and direct in the verses, almost as if he were telling you the story in person. ‘caller waiting’ is a song that invites you to dance without hiding its emotional depths.

Closure (All I Want Is) – Brannen

Scottish electronic musician Brannen explores the difficult feeling of trying to move on from something that still occupies your thoughts in ‘Closure (All I Want Is)’. Memories resurface, questions remain unanswered, and it’s simply impossible to draw a clear line under it all. Musically, Brannen relies on warm melodies, expansive synth pads and a beat that gives the track real momentum. Yet the emotional elements do not clash with the rhythm; rather, they fit together quite naturally. The music has a contemplative quality without ever sinking into melancholy. ‘Closure (All I Want Is)’ doesn’t tell a complete story, but leaves room for your own thoughts and experiences. That’s precisely what makes the track so appealing.
