Anger, rebellion and the desire for change characterise ‘The Future (Proves Me Right)’ by the Berlin-based trio ATOMIC FRUIT. The song features on their new album Serpentine, on which the band blends diverse musical expressions ranging from driving live energy to dark electronic soundscapes and experimental edge.
Theme-wise, it deals with a world in flux, in which old authorities and ways of thinking are increasingly being called into question, without this automatically giving rise to anything new. The lyrics oscillate between anger, disbelief and a desire for liberation, whilst the stark imagery conveys an almost aggressive determination. Behind this, however, lies more than mere rebellion: It also raises the question of how much we are actually changing and whether we are prepared to leave familiar patterns of behaviour behind.
‘The Future (Proves Me Right)’ is thus a piece about self-determination and the courage to break free from the past. A sombre, rebellious commentary on a present in which, whilst the future lies in our hands, we ourselves must decide what to make of it.
