Hollywood Brown is back – and not quietly, but with a metallic, sparkling bang. The Aftermath, his new mini-album on Filofx Records, feels like the moment when someone flicks the power switch on stage and the guitars immediately start crackling. Fresh from his support slots with Lebrock and Hyperreal, Brown brings exactly that live energy with him: hot with sweat, self-assured, a bit larger than life. Intended as a “hard-rockin’ follow-up” to the original Reverberator, The Aftermath takes six of the catchiest tracks and transforms them into glam-metal stumpers that sound as though they’ve always been clad in leather jackets. The songs have a broader sound, the riffs are sharper, and the hooks carry more glitter and weight at the same time. It’s less a remix than a reconstruction: Hollywood Brown shows just how much rock has always been slumbering at the heart of these tracks – and how good they sound when you finally let them loose.
