With ‘SONIC NEW LIFE’, These Girls Are Electric paint a picture of a future in which technology has long since become part of our lives and even influences how we feel and interact with one another. It’s about loneliness, the desire to break free, and the hope of finding someone with whom you feel a genuine connection. People seem to be stuck in their everyday lives, following rules they never chose for themselves.
The lyrics range from images of captivity and electrical impulses to journeys through space. It feels as if we have to leave Earth behind to make a fresh start. Music and electricity offer a way into another world. But no matter how far we go, we still long for love and affection.
There is a clear conflict between freedom and closeness. We want to live our own lives, but we still need people who understand us. ‘SONIC NEW LIFE’ plays with this idea without providing a clear-cut answer. Amidst machines, distant galaxies and human needs, one simple realisation remains in the end: we need one another, even as the world around us is constantly changing.
