With ‘Skip a Turn’, deb. draws us into a game whose rules suddenly no longer seem so simple. Life becomes a board game in which everyone else seems to be making progress effortlessly, whilst you yourself are trying to keep track of it all. Blending jazzy influences with light-footed pop moments, the result is a song that seems playful at first glance, but which, beneath the surface, is certainly thought-provoking.
Who hasn’t been there? You get the feeling that everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing, whilst you’re still trying to work out what it’s all about. It is precisely this feeling that deb. captures. The desire to keep up and fit in clashes with the question of whether you really have to play by the rules that others lay down. Do you always have to win, be faster and get ahead? Or is it okay to sit it out for a moment, take a deep breath and find your own way?
‘Skip a Turn’ reminds us of how uncomplicated the world once seemed – and how quickly it can turn into a race. With a good dose of light-heartedness and a touch of humour, deb. turns this into a charming jazz-pop song that makes you smile whilst striking a chord. Because sometimes, it might not be such a bad thing to simply sit one round out.
